Acorn production a little low this year in parts of Maryland

Right about now, Marylanders cannot escape the sound of acorns and other nuts bouncing off cars and sidewalks and cracking underfoot, attracting squirrels and deer and other wildlife. However, thanks to prolonged days of rain in the spring, "this year the acorn production is a little below normal in most places in the state," according to the Department of Natural Resources. Did you know that the official state tree is the acorn-producing white oak? A copper-covered figure of an acorn sits on top of the State House in Annapolis. The acorn, which can grow into a mighty oak, stood as a symbol of sturdiness, stability and longevity to Colonial citizens.
