Road crews planned to be out in Western Maryland Saturday morning and on call in metro areas. More freezing drizzle was expected overnight that could lead to icy roads, with temperatures expected to hover around freezing, according to state highway officials.
Snow and rain delayed schools Friday in the Baltimore region, Carroll County and the Hereford Zone of Baltimore County, and closed them in Frederick County. It kept crews busy throughout the day, salting during the morning hours and monitoring for icy spots later as the snow turned to rain in many areas, said Valerie Burnette Edgar of the State Highway Administration.
There was no two-way traffic planned on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge during rush hour Friday night, according to John Sales at the Maryland Transportation Authority.
As of 2:30 p.m., about 2 inches of snow had fallen in Westminster, 2 inches in Columbia, 2.8 inches in Brooklandville and 1.1 inch at BWI airport, the point of record, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures are expected to rise into the 50s Saturday, the first full day of spring — the official season change was 6:45 p.m. Friday. The forecast calls for sun and a high of 54 with winds of 5 to 10 mph. Lows of 34 were expected Saturday night with some sun and a high near 47 expected Sunday.
