Maryland weather: Enjoy the warm temperatures while you can — snow could be back this weekend

Temperatures around Baltimore surpassed 70 degrees Tuesday, a rare but not unprecedented bout of winter warmth, meteorologists said. But some periods of colder weather and snow are in the short-term forecast.Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and the Inner Harbor both hit 71 by 3 p.m.That is more than 25 degrees above average for Feb. 5, and 2 degrees away from matching a record high for the date &#8212; 73 degrees, set in 1991.On average, temperatures reach the 60s in Baltimore about seven times each winter, meteorologists at the National Weather Service&#8217;s Baltimore/Washington forecast office said. Tuesday is the fourth time it has gotten so warm this winter in Baltimore.Rain will gradually overspread the region today and continue into tonight. pic.twitter.com/JsON0nvifY&mdash; NWS DC/Baltimore (@NWS_BaltWash) February 6, 2019 And they said temperatures hit 70 during the winter months only about once a season, on average.Until Tuesday, temperatures hadn&#8217;t reached 70 in Baltimore since Nov. 2.The surge of heat comes less than a week after temperatures dropped as low as 5 degrees, and remained below freezing for more than three days straight. And Tuesday also marked the nine-year anniversary of the back-to-back winter storms that became known as Snowmageddon, dropping more than 40 inches of snow on the Baltimore region over five days.A cold front is forecast to bring a pause to the warmth by Wednesday, though, with temperatures forecast to drop back into the 40s.Highs could reach the 50s amid rainy weather Thursday and Friday, but then even colder weather is forecast for the weekend, with temperatures in the 30s.And it could bring a chance for snow. Forecasters are watching chances for snow and rain showers Sunday night into Monday, but it wasn&#8217;t yet clear how much wintry precipitation could fall.
