Severe thunderstorm warning in effect in the Anne Arundel area

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the Baltimore area Sunday afternoon.

The warning was in effect in eastern Baltimore City, southeastern Baltimore County and northern Anne Arundel County through 4:30 p.m. The National Weather Service later tweeted the warning was extended until 5:15 p.m. for Glen Burnie, Dundalk and Pasadena before issuing an alert for Severna Park, Annapolis and Pasadena until 5:45 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm was spotted over the Essex-Middle River area at 3:51 p.m. and was moving westward.

The storms could bring 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail to the region, the weather service said.

“Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall,” the National Weather Service predicts. “This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles.”
