Tornado touched down in Ocean City, began as water spout

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Ocean City earlier this week and caused structural damage to several businesses in the area.

The agency confirmed Tuesday that the tornado came during a severe thunderstorm Monday afternoon. It was rated an EF-0 tornado with peak winds estimated to be at 80 mph and a path 50 yards wide.

Officials say the tornado started as a waterspout in the Assawoman Bay, came ashore at 4:40 p.m. and lasted until 4:45 p.m.

The tornado overturned a large supply container, and caused it to be moved to the next beach over. No injuries were reported.
