State Highway Administration officials urged drivers to remain cautious on Wednesday evening's commute and to delay travel if necessary.

"No matter the strength of the storm, we expect that any precipitation will affect this afternoon's commute," SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters said in a statement. "Our crews, along with emergency responders, will be patrolling, salting and plowing roads."

Forecasters are meanwhile watching weather models that suggest a storm will move up the Atlantic coast Friday and Saturday, possibly bringing snow, rain or a messy mix.

"Right now, the question is where exactly does it track, and how much cold air do we have that's going to move over the region?" said Dan Hofmann, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Baltimore/Washington forecast office.

Models are converging on the possibility of a wintry mix turning to snow Friday and Saturday, according to WMAR-TV meteorologist Mike Masco. But it's still too early to predict anything specific.
