Flood watch in effect across Baltimore region Thursday night and Friday, with still more rain in forecast

Yet another round of heavy rain could produce more flooding Thursday night and Friday across Maryland, the National Weather Service warned.

A flood watch is in effect across the Baltimore region from 7 p.m. Thursday through Friday afternoon. At least an inch or two of rain is forecast, with chances for 3-4 inches in some spots.

It could be the region’s second round of flooding within a week, further growing rain totals in what is already Baltimore’s wettest year on record. Widespread flooding of streams and urban areas was reported Saturday when more than 2 inches of rain fell across the area.

“The rain has been relentless this year and late December appears to be no exception,” Maryland Emergency Management Agency Executive Director Russ Strickland said, urging residents to be cautious and pay attention to forecasts.

The latest round of rain is expected to be the product of a low pressure system tracking in from the southwest, fueled by moisture from both the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. The setup is expected to produce “unusually high amounts of moisture for this time of year,” weather service meteorologists said.

The rain is forecast to arrive Thursday night and exit the region toward New England by Friday afternoon.

Rain keeps falling in what's already Baltimore's wettest year on record. Here are the numbers, drip by drip. »

It could produce flooding both because the ground is still saturated from other recent rain, and because the precipitation could be so heavy at times.

There has been 68.82 inches of rain so far this year at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, more than 6 inches above the previous record-wettest year, 2003.

That means rainfall will likely surpass 70 inches for the year in Baltimore (and much of the Mid-Atlantic). That is on par with normal annual precipitation in the Pacific Northwest.
