What to expect, weather-wise, at Preakness 2016

Heavy rain is in the forecast Saturday. Here's what to expect if you are heading to the 141st Preakness Stakes, or were otherwise hoping to spend some time outside this weekend:

FAQs about the 2016 Preakness
  • Timing: Rain arrived about 6 a.m. and the heaviest showers are expected to continue through about midday. Rain chances diminish in the afternoon, but lighter showers are expected to continue through the evening as a large area of low-pressure moves up the Atlantic coast.

Patchy fog is expected after 3 p.m. with a 50 percent chance of precipitation.

  • Amounts: Half an inch to three quarters of an inch of rain is expected in Baltimore, while heavier amounts of greater than an inch are forecast to the southeast. As of 10 a.m., 0.27 inches was reported at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

  • Temperatures: The rain and otherwise consistent cloud cover will help keep temperatures well below normal, with highs only forecast in the upper 50s.

  • The rest of the weekend: Drizzly weather is forecast to continue Sunday, though temperatures are expected to warm slightly into the lower 60s.
