Warmth but storm chances forecast for Opening Day at Oriole Park

Temperatures are expected to surge into the 60s and 70s Friday for Opening Day at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, but some strong storms could pop up in the afternoon and evening as a cold front approaches the region.

A warm front is forecast to usher in a southerly flow of mild air overnight Thursday into Friday, bringing highs into the 70s and possibly even the 80s in Virginia, according to the National Weather Service's Baltimore/Washington forecast office.

But as a cold front moves in to meet the warmth, some spring thunderstorms could develop.

"It looks like we have a chance to see some storms with potency," said Kevin Witt, a weather service meteorologist.

When they arrive depends on the cold front's speed, Witt said. Four days out, the storms are expected in the afternoon and evening hours, though that could change later in the week.

First pitch for the Orioles home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
