Tropical depressions not forecast to reach Maryland

Tropical Depression Nine is forecast to become either Tropical Storm Hermine or Tropical Storm Ian on Monday. (National Hurricane Center/NOAA)

Two tropical depressions that could become Tropical Storms Hermine and Ian aren't forecast to affect Maryland, forecasters say.

The Atlantic hurricane season's eighth tropical depression is expected to bring heavy downpours, flash flooding and rough surf along the North Carolina coast early this week.

It is forecast to make its closest approach to the Outer Banks on Tuesday morning, but then turn out toward sea.

Meanwhile, a Gulf of Mexico system, the season's ninth tropical depression, is expected to become a tropical storm by Tuesday and move across northern Florida on Friday. The storm's track is expected to follow the coast of the Carolinas on Friday before shifting out to sea by Saturday.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service's Baltimore/Washington forecast office said they are monitoring the system but expect high pressure over the region late in the week "to suppress any system to the south and east."
