For about the past week and for another week going forward, sunrise is at 7:26 a.m., its latest of the year in Baltimore.
By the end of January, sunrise is about 10 minutes earlier. The earliest sunsets of the year occurred about a month ago at 4:43 p.m., but are now nearly at 5 p.m.
The latest sunrises and earliest sunsets don't coincide with the winter solstice Dec. 21 because our clock doesn't align precisely with the "solar" clock. That is, solar noon, when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, is not tied to noon on our clock and actually shifts around throughout the year.
