Sunshine, wind chills in single digits forecast Thursday

More frigid temperatures are forecast Thursday, in the teens and 20s throughout the day with winds making it feel like the single digits.

Sunny skies are expected to provide some warmth, but it will be little help after temperatures dropped to 8 degrees in the early morning hours at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Temperatures had risen to 16 degrees by noon, with a wind chill of 2 degrees.

Temperatures are forecast to top out in upper teens or lower 20s in the afternoon. But winds from the west at 10-20 mph are making it feel as much as 15 degrees colder.

The cold prompted several school districts to delay openings. Anne Arundel, Baltimore City, Harford and Prince George's County officials said Wednesday afternoon that schools would open two hours late Thursday morning. Find a comprehensive list of school delays and closings here.

Temperatures are forecast in the upper teens early Friday morning, with highs reaching the mid-30s in the afternoon. But more blustery winds at about 15-25 mph are expected to make it feel like the teens and 20s.

Cold continues through the weekend, with lows in the teens again Saturday and Sunday mornings and highs in the upper 20s and mid-30s, respectively.

Forecasters are watching chances for a wintry mix of precipitation early next week.
