Winter weather advisory issued with wintry mix, freezing rain possible Tuesday

A winter weather advisory is in effect for northwestern portions of the Baltimore area for Tuesday as a sub-freezing chill continues across the region.

Carroll, Howard and northern Baltimore counties are under the advisory from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, with snow and sleet possible early and changing to freezing rain later in the day. An inch of snow and sleet is possible, with a tenth of an inch of ice.

The rest of the region is in for a cold rain, with wintry precipitation also possible Wednesday.

Further west, wintry precipitation is more likely. Allegany and Washington counties are under a winter weather advisory Tuesday from 3 a.m. through 4 p.m. Up to an inch of snow and sleet followed by as much as a tenth of an inch of freezing rain is forecast there. Garrett County is under a winter storm warning, with 4-8 inches of snow from Tuesday morning through early Thursday.

The forecast came as frigid conditions continue across Maryland.

Overnight lows reached 19 degrees at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and 25 degrees at the Inner Harbor early Monday morning, with wind chills from the upper single digits into the teens. That is despite winds being relatively calmer than they were Sunday, about 10 mph.

High temperatures Monday are forecast in the mid- to upper 30s, with the winds making it feel no warmer than about 30 degrees. Temperatures spent 36 hours straight below freezing, from late Saturday night through noon Monday, before rising to 36 degrees at BWI by 3 p.m.

Temperatures aren't expected to drop significantly colder overnight Monday into Tuesday, however, with lows around freezing. Highs Tuesday could reach 40 degrees.

For areas too warm for wintry precipitation, significant rainfall is expected, with more than an inch possible.

A cold rain is expected to continue into Wednesday in Baltimore, with temperatures again in the 30s to around 40 degrees, but a gusty wind is forecast to return, and some snow is possible.

Winds of 15-25 mph are forecast Wednesday, and with temperatures dropping back into the mid- to lower 30s later on Wednesday, a chance of at least a wintry mix in the afternoon and evening is expected.

Other prognosticators are calling for a chance for some snow for the evening rush hour Wednesday. The Weather Underground's Jeff Masters suggests 2-4 inches of snow is possible from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia, though he said confidence in the prediction is still low.

However, local meteorologist "Eric the Red" notes that without a high-pressure system to block cold Arctic air and send it south, conditions will likely be too warm for anything but perhaps some light, wet snow Wednesday evening.

Tranquil yet still-cold weather is forecast for Thanksgiving, with highs in the mid- to upper 30s and lows in the lower 20s on Thursday under mostly clear skies.
