Storms still threaten in Opening Day forecast

Little has changed in a forecast suggesting risks of storms and brief, heavy rain showers during Friday's Opening Day game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Warm, moist air from the south is forecast to start flowing into the region Friday morning, introducing instability to the atmosphere that could fuel storms.

Highs are forecast to reach the upper 70s, so as long as precipitation holds off, it should feel pleasant, if a little muggy. Mostly cloudy skies are expected, and any sunshine that breaks through would only add to that instability.

But a cold front is expected to arrive Friday night, with rain and storms ahead of it and along it.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.

The forecast doesn't suggest a rainout, but possibly a delay. Storms or showers are expected to be scattered, and it's impossible to tell precisely where they might develop, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

There is a risk that any storms will be strong or severe. The weather service's Storm Prediction Center places Central Maryland in an area with a "slight" risk of severe weather Friday. Storms are possible from the Carolinas to southern New Jersey.

In Maryland, storm chances are greatest along and east of Interstate 95, according to the weather service.

If storms do turn severe, the biggest threats are expected to be damaging wind and hail, according to the storm center.

One key predictor of storm chances could be the conditions for pre-game partiers along Washington Boulevard and Eutaw Street earlier in the day. In this case, gloomy will be good.

"It's going to be all about the sunshine from, say, 10 a.m. on," said Kevin Witt, a weather service meteorologist.
