Throughout January, you can spot Comet Lovejoy using binoculars. In particularly dark areas, it may be visible with the naked eye on a clear night.
Look to the southeast after sunset, near the constellation Orion, the hunter. The comet’s position will move northward, through the constellations Taurus and Auriga, over the course of the month. Sky & Telescope offers tips and a viewing chart to help find it.
The comet passes its closest to Earth on Wednesday, at a distance less than half Earth’s distance from the sun, about 44 million miles. It will meanwhile to continue to brighten as it approaches it closest point to the sun at the end of the month.
