Slick spots, wind chills in 20s forecast Monday

Icy side roads and sidewalks on Monday morning closed some public school systems around Maryland. (Jeffrey F. Bill, Baltimore Sun)

Icy conditions are expected to slicken and slow the Monday morning commute, and though some sunshine could bring melting, cold northwest winds are expected to make it feel well below freezing.

About a third-of-an-inch of ice coated surfaces around the region Sunday, and with overnight lows in the upper 20s, scraping and salting will be necessary to start the week.

Schools in Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Harford counties, as well as Baltimore City, closed Monday, and many colleges and surrounding school systems delayed openings. For updated school and college closings, go to bsun.md/snowday.

Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 30s Monday afternoon, but with 15-25 mph winds, it's forecast to feel like the mid-20s. Partly cloudy skies are expected.

More precipitation is forecast Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs are forecast in the mid-30s Tuesday, with gusty winds and a wintry mix expected to arrive by afternoon. The precipitation is expected to turn to rain as temperatures warm into the 40s, possibly reaching 50, on Wednesday.

But another burst of wintry precipitation is possible Wednesday night into Thursday morning as the system moves out of the region and temperatures drop back into the upper 20s. A wintry mix of precipitation could linger into Thursday.

Sunshine and more cold temperatures in the 20s and 30s are forecast at the end of the week.
