Meteorological spring 2013 ended with a burst of heat in Baltimore but, overall, saw normal temperatures, according to National Weather Service data. Rainfall, however, was a few inches below normal.

The average temperature from March through May was about 53 degrees, a couple of tenths of an inch below the record-book average for the region. A particularly cold March was balanced by slightly warmer-than-normal temperatures in April and May.

May saw a wide range of extremes, with a 34-degree low on the 14th day of the month, tying a record set in 1996, and a 92-degree high on the 30th.

Each month of meteorological spring was meanwhile drier than normal. Measured at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, 8.27 inches of rain fell over the three-month span. The long-term average for the period is 11.1 inches.

So far this year, 14.54 inches of rain have fallen at BWI, about three inches shy of normal after four consecutive months of drier-than-normal weather.
