One of Baltimore's longest stretches of 90-degree heat in years is forecast to begin Wednesday after the region just missed that mark Tuesday.
A high of 89 degrees was reported at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on Tuesday afternoon. Starting Wednesday, meteorologists are forecasting highs in the 90s into the weekend.
With that heat, poor air quality is expected. "Code Orange" conditions, unhealthy for sensitive groups like children, the elderly and those with heart or lung ailments, are forecast Wednesday through Friday.
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has hit the 90s seven times this year -- twice in May and five times in June. That is on par with each of the past three years, but many fewer than were tallied in the hot summers of 2010 through 2012.
It has been rare in recent years for Baltimore to experience more than three days in the 90s in a row.
The longest such heat wave in recent years came when highs hit the 90s, and mostly the mid-90s, for a week straight from July 15-21, 2013, at BWI.
Since then, the longest stretch of 90-degree heat came on the first four days of September 2015, when the airport twice hit 94 degrees.
Baltimore hasn't hit the triple digits since July 2012.
