December's full moon, known as the Cold Moon or the Long Night's Moon, comes early Saturday morning, but you can spot it Friday night.

The moon is only technically full for a moment, and this month, that occurs at 7:27 a.m. Saturday. But the sun will be up by then, and the moon just below the horizon.

The moon will appear full when the sun sets at 4:43 p.m., about 15 minutes after moonrise.

The moon sets at 7:01 a.m. Saturday, about 10 minutes before sunrise and about 25 minutes before the moon is actually full.

This month's full moon gets its names because of the wintry weather that arrives this time of year, of course, and because it is the closest to the winter solstice. At the solstice, on Dec. 21, the sun is gone from our sky for more than 14 and a half hours long, the longest of the year.
