Though Baltimore started meteorological summer with a chill, last month ended as the region's seventh-warmest May on record.

The average temperature at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport was 69.1 degrees, the warmest there for the month of May since 2004. That was 6.2 degrees above normal.

The average was a tenth of a degree warmer than May 2012.

The warmth helped reverse what has been a cold trend for the rest of the year to date. The first three months of the year were all colder than normal, including a February that was second-coldest on record. April was less than 1 degree warmer than normal.

It was also dry, with 2.1 inches only slightly more than half of normal.

But so far both trends are going in the other direction in June. The 3.05 inches of rain that has fallen already is less than half an inch away from the normal total for the full month.

Tuesday's high of 67 at BWI was more than 10 degrees below normal, and Wednesday and Thursday are forecast to be even cooler.
