June 2013 was Baltimore's wettest since record-setting June 1972

If last month seemed wetter than any June you can remember, it might just be – the 7.81 inches of rain that fell over the month at BWI Marshall Airport was the most in Baltimore since June 1972, when Hurricane Agnes helped bring a record-setting 9.95 inches.

The June 2013 total ties with June 1881 as the seventh-wettest since record-keeping began in 1871. Only three other times in the last 65 years was June wetter – in 1948, 1951 and 1963.

Agnes dropped more than 6 inches at BWI over two days, from June 21-22, 1972, setting rainfall records for both days.

Tropical Storm Andrea was no Agnes, but brought a still heavy 2.25 inches of rain this past June 7. Two other storms packing significant moisture dumped more than an inch apiece in the following week.

The monthly total was 4.35 inches above normal, bringing the year-to-date tally above normal at just over 21 inches so far.
