Forecasters watching chances for weekend wintry weather

Forecasts suggest a rainy or snowy storm could sweep up the mid-Atlantic this weekend, and though it's still early for a solid prediction, it's worth watching.

The latest models suggest the heaviest of the precipitation could stay south of Maryland, but some light rain and snow or sleet could pass through Saturday night. National Weather Service meteorologists say European and American forecast models are "still miles apart" on a forecast, but are starting to converge.

The scenario is similar to coastal storms that passed through last week and just before Thanksgiving, with a significant amount of moisture moving up from the southwest, but limited cold air coming from the northwest to fuel wintry precipitation.

For now, the weather service is going with a 60 percent chance of rain and snow Saturday with a wintry mix into early Sunday. But that is likely to change as Saturday gets nearer and, with more information and greater model reliability, forecasts are refined.

Local meteorologist Eric Luebehusen is not banking on a major storm, saying "if I had to guess how this weekend is gonna play out, I'd lean toward 'not much' if anything at all."
