Foliage reaches peak color across Maryland

It has been slowly creeping eastward from the mountains of Western Maryland, and now, the most brilliant of autumn foliage has reached most of the Baltimore area.

Deciduous trees on the northwest side of Interstate 95 are at peak fall color, according to a report Thursday by the Foliage Network, a group that monitors leaf conditions across the eastern U.S.

The peak colors stretch from Cumberland to Elkton, with far Western Maryland already past peak and most leaves already on the ground, according to the report.

Trees have reached "high" levels of fall color in the southern half of the state, including in Anne Arundel County and on the Eastern Shore.

The report noted "moderate" levels of leaf drop across most of the state, with half or more of leaves still on their branches.

This year's weather suggests this fall is a good one for beautiful foliage. According to the network, "ideal foliage is produced by a warm and wet spring, typical summer conditions, and mild, sunny autumn days with cool evenings."
