Rainfall was about three-quarters of an inch below average in September (and it was almost much drier than that), but the year is nonetheless on pace to be among Baltimore's top 15 wettest years on record.
There was 3.21 inches of rain last month at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, the point of record for Baltimore. Normal September rainfall is just over 4 inches.
That brings the year-to-date total there to 41.48 inches.
It's rare for rainfall to surpass 40 inches through the first three-quarters of the year here, occuring only once or twice a year each decade on record. This year's total through September ranks 15th out of the nearly century and a half of records, behind 2011, 2003 and 1996, most recently.
Though this September was a relatively dry month, it was also actually the wettest September at BWI since that wet year in 2011. A record-setting 13.32 inches of rain fell in a soggy September 2011, largely from remnants of Tropical Storm Lee.
Last month was on pace to be a lot drier, with more than two-thirds of the rain falling in the last six days of September.
