Cold rain, possible ice forecast Tuesday from coastal storm

A coastal storm is forecast to bring more snow to the inland Northeast, an icy mess in western Maryland but mostly just cold, heavy rain in the Baltimore area.

The National Weather Service is forecasting an inch and a half to two inches of rain from late Monday night through early Wednesday morning. Most precipitation is forecast to fall as liquid in the Baltimore area, even though wind chills are forecast in the upper 20s overnight Monday into Tuesday.

Some freezing rain and/or snow are possible Monday night at higher elevations north and west of Baltimore, including Carroll County and northern Baltimore County.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Carroll, northern Baltimore and Harford counties, as well as to the west in Frederick, Washington and Allegany counties. A glaze of ice and light snow are expected to mix in with the rain at higher elevations.

A storm is developing that is expected to move up from the Carolinas to New England on Tuesday and Wednesday. It is expected to bring heavy snow to inland New England, and possibly freezing rain, as well. Winter storm watches and warnings are in effect from northeastern Pennsylvania to Maine.

Even if it doesn't bring any wintry precipitation, the storm will bring strong winds to Maryland, with 15-25 mph gusts Tuesday and Wednesday.

Flooding could also be a concern in the Baltimore, the weather service cautioned, with many storm drains possibly still clogged with autumn leaves.
