'Code Orange' air pollution alert issued as heat wave begins

Across the region emergency officials are preparing for the dangerous heat.

Air pollution is expected to reach unhealthy levels Friday as a heat wave sets in, forecast to last into early next week.

A "Code Orange" alert is in effect, indicating pollution concentrations that could make breathing more difficult for people with heart or lung conditions, the elderly and children.

Highs Friday are forecast in the mid-90s, and with sunshine and moderate humidity, it is expected to feel a few degrees hotter.

It could be the first of five days in a row to hit the mid- or upper 90s, one of the longest and most intense heat waves the Baltimore region has seen in years. The heat index is forecast to hit the triple digits Saturday and again on Monday.

Health officials are urging residents to be cautious of heat-related illnesses. They encourage limiting time spent outside; drinking more water than usual, even if you don't feel thirsty; wearing light, loose-fitting clothing; and taking a cool shower or bath, if necessary.

Remember to check on elderly neighbors and children, and never leave a pet or child in a car, even with the windows cracked.
