A tornado snapped a large tree trunk and other large branches but did not damage any property when it struck southern Frederick County on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
It hit the Tuscarora area of southern Frederick County at 7:39 p.m. Saturday, crossing a mile-and-a-half-long path over a period of six minutes. The tornado had maximum winds of 65 mph and was 75 yards wide, weather service meteorologists determined after surveying damage.
The tornado formed near the intersection of Buckeystown Pike and Tuscarora Road before moving northeast to Greenfield Road, snapping tree branches and knocking over a mailbox on its way.
It is estimated to have been rated EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, the weakest category of tornado, with wind speeds of 65 mph to 85 mph.
The tornado came as severe storms moved through the region Saturday night, causing flash flooding and prompting several tornado warnings around the Baltimore region. No other tornadoes have been confirmed in the state from the storms.
