Expect chilly, windy weather Tuesday and Wednesday

Be prepared for sunny but frigid weather this week, with highs reaching only the lower 30s Tuesday and Wednesday, forecasters say.

Tuesday's high is expected to only reach the lower 30s with breezes nearing 20 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph. Wednesday's weather will be similar, but less windy.

Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport dropped to 24 degrees early Tuesday morning, with a wind chill of 14 degrees. The airport climbed to 30 degrees by 11 a.m., but with wind gusts reaching 30 mph, the wind chill remained in the teens.

Though the cold is 15-20 degrees below normal, it missed one record and appeared unlikely to break a second on Tuesday. The record low for Tuesday's date in Baltimore is 20 degrees, and the coldest high temperature on record is 31 degrees.

New records are possible Wednesday, however, with a 35-degree record for the coldest daily maximum temperature and a 20-degree record low. Overnight lows are forecast in the upper teens and lower 20s early Wednesday morning.

The weekend will be warmer. Saturday is expected to be sunny and in the low-40s. Sunday's high will reach the upper 50s but there is a 70 percent chance of rain.
