Budget Travel names Berlin 'America's Coolest Small Town'

Berlin is feeling a little cooler than usual after being named "America's Coolest Small Town" by Budget Travel magazine.

The Eastern Shore town topped the in the magazine's 9th annual online contest to find hip and happening tiny burgs across the United States. With a population of 4,563, a beautiful downtown, a popular craft brewery, museums and even a song - "Cool Berlin" - to promote the town, Berlin ticked all the boxes, winning about 39,285 votes in the contest that began Jan. 16 and ended early Tuesday.

“The people in the town of Berlin are delighted to have been voted America’s Coolest Small Town by Budget Travel editors and readers," said Mayor William "Gee" Williams III. "We garnered votes from all parts of Maryland (and from friends way beyond our borders as well) during the voting period and very much appreciate the support of past and future guests to Berlin.”

Budget Travel said more than 137,000 votes were cast overall but it characterized Berlin as the "runaway favorite."

"Whether you're a beach lover, hiker, kayaker, bird watcher, or history aficionado, put Berlin on your list of small-town must-sees (in fact, put it at the top of your list — we just did!)," Budget Travel editors wrote on their blog announcing that Berlin came in first place.
