Will free gas get you to the shore? Ocean City officials certainly think so.

The resort town is working on a promotion that would offer up to $100,000 in free gas to visitors to Ocean City this summer.

I heard about the gas giveaway in a phone call from Ocean Gallery owner Joe Kroart - he's always got his ear to the Boardwalk. Kroart explained that the town council voted earlier this month to allocate the $100,000 for the promotion from its advertising budget.

Seems like a good plan, especially since just having the plan has already generated a good amount of publicity. (Like on chatty blogs.)

Town officials are trying to figure out exactly how the promotion will play out. Will it be a sweepstakes? Gas cards? In what denominations?

Whatever it ends up being, the town has already won out with the free buzz. But OC will need to work out the details soon before the excitement wears thin - or gas prices fall.
