Day Trip: Historic Alexandria House and Garden Tour

Where: Old Town Alexandria, Va. Refreshments will be served at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House, 323 S. Fairfax St., beginning at 11 a.m.

When: Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What: Take a self-guided tour of Old Town Alexandria's walled gardens, intimate courtyards and stately historic homes during the 77th annual Historic Alexandria House and Garden Tour. Five of the town's finest historic homes are part of the tour, including a classic Federal house that was home to George Washington's nephew and Martha Washington's favorite niece. Another home on the tour houses a Civil War museum that features the camp chair of Robert E. Lee.

How much: On the day of the event, tour tickets are $40 and single house or garden admission is $10. Tickets may be purchased at the Alexandria Visitors Center and at each of the private homes. Advance tickets are $35 and may be purchased at the visitors center or, for a service fee, online at vagardenweek.org.

What's nearby: The tour ticket also includes admission to nearby Mount Vernon, George Washington's estate and gardens. The estate's spring plant sale features a collection of tools, gadgets, books, seeds, pots and more, as well as plants and herbs grown at Mount Vernon. Garden and landscape tours are also available.
