What's new, events to see at the Outer Banks and North Carolina beaches

Attractions for families visiting the Outer Banks go beyond its miles of shorelines.

What’s new

Jumpmasters Trampoline Park. 728 U.S. Highway 64, Manteo, N.C.; facebook.com/JumpmastersOBX; $16-$35. Featuring trampolines, foam pits and American Ninja Warrior-style obstacles, Jumpmasters is slated to open in June.

OBX Frozen Yogurt. 1 Ocean Blvd., Suite 107, Southern Shores, N.C.; obxfroyo.com. This froyo shop relocated and expanded last year. This year the store added a roving food truck.

Publix. 1530 N. Croatan Highway, Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; publix.com. The Florida-based supermarket opened its first location in the Outer Banks this winter.

North Carolina’s state legislature repealed a ban on single-use plastic bags in the Outer Banks last fall, but many towns along the barrier island, as well as the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce and the Dare County Board of Commissions, passed resolutions to keep the ban on plastic bags.

Don’t try to visit Shelly Island, the large sandbar that formed last spring off Cape Hatteras. Satellite images show the island washed away as quickly as it formed.

Wright Kite Festival: The 40th annual Wright Kite Festival (July 14-15) celebrates the feat of flight in the shadow of the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Outer Banks Watermelon Festival: What better way to celebrate summer’s peak than with melons? This annual festival (Aug. 1) at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing includes games, face painting, arts and crafts, and contests for seed spitting and watermelon eating. 3933 S. 100th Anniversary of the Mirlo Rescue: This year marks the 100th anniversary of the rescue of crew members aboard the Mirlo, a British ship that was struck by a German torpedo off Cape Hatteras in 1918.
