North Carolina's state legislature repealed a ban on single-use plastic bags in the Outer Banks last fall, but many towns along the barrier island, as well as the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce and the Dare County Board of Commissions, passed resolutions to keep the ban on plastic bags.
Don't try to visit Shelly Island, the large sandbar that formed last spring off Cape Hatteras. Satellite images show the island washed away as quickly as it formed.

100th Anniversary of the Mirlo Rescue: This year marks the 100th anniversary of the rescue of crew members aboard the Mirlo, a British ship that was struck by a German torpedo off Cape Hatteras in 1918.
