Ocean City FAQ: When to go, what to do and more

Everything you need to know to have a successful trip to Ocean City:

Best times to visit: "Ocean City has become a year-round destination," says Savas Karas, among the "OC Insiders," frequent visitors who know Ocean City in and out and work with the town to help answer tourist questions. Practically speaking, summer is full of fun, free family-oriented activities and fall is festival season.

Worst times to visit: Recent high school grads will flood the city during June.

Beach rules: Ocean City's 10 miles of beaches are free and open to the public from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The Ocean City Beach Patrol guards from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily between the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Sunfest weekend (the third weekend after Labor Day).

This year, new developments in Ocean City include a smattering of restaurants and attractions, a few rules and regulations, and some fresh food and exercise options that will help you stay healthy and fit, even in the land of funnel cakes and French fries.

No glass containers, alcohol or private vehicles on the beach. There's no sleeping on the beach after hours, and no one is permitted on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m.

To request a permit for a beach bonfire, visit oceancitymd.gov for information.

Ball playing, Frisbee-throwing and kite-flying are not permitted on the beach between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. between May 30 and Sept. 15.

Smoking is permitted only on certain areas of the boardwalk and beach.
