See you next summer, Ocean City!

The Baltimore Sun

We're several days into the fall season and the sun seems to have disappeared. So I think that's my cue to pack up the beach towels, shake off the sand, wean myself off the taffy and caramel corn diet, grab a few souvenirs and take this OC blog on hiatus.

It's been a terribly exciting summer season in Ocean City. The resort town has been in the news for all the right - and some wrong - reasons. We've had visits from a hurricane, a tornado, the Dew Tour and the Jersey Shore! The boardwalk has been named the best boardwalk, best family value and best summer destination on Earth. (That's unofficial.)

But just because I'm going into hibernation doesn't mean Ocean City is. The resort has several events lined up to keep things hopping right through the end of the year. There's Winefest on the Beach, which begins Friday. Fall Restaurant Week begins Oct. 2. The Endless Summer Cruisin' car show returns Oct. 6. Oktoberfest is Oct. 14. A vintage License Plate Rally set for Oct. 22 will feature cars driving down the boardwalk. And the Winterfest of Lights begins Nov. 17.

Plenty to do and plenty reasons to visit the shore. The off-season, when hotels are cheaper and the boardwalk is quieter, can be a great fall getaway. (I like October better than April because the water is still warm.) And it's never too early to make plans for Summer 2012.

So thanks, OC, for a great beach season. We'll be back next year.
