Make a reservation today and you could be horseback riding on Ocean City's beachfront by the weekend.
The city's town council late Monday passed a proposal to allow horseback riding in the off-season, from Nov. 1 to March 30.
Visitors will need to secure a permit at a cost of $50 for each horse, limited to two riders. Additional riders could be added for $25. At Monday's meeting, council members said they will also offer a $20 permit for a day pass along with the seasonal permit.
The measure, approved on a 4-3 vote, allows horseback riding beginning at the northernmost extension of 27th Street and extending south to the south end jetty. Riding in any dune area or nesting area is prohibited. Not cleaning up after your horse will carry a $500 fine.
Councilman Brent Ashley, who originated the proposal, said he got the idea from the mayor of Wildwood, N.J., which recently began allowing horseback riding on its beaches.
"Most of our competitors do this," he says. "We're all looking to increase our tourism factor. ... Feedback has been very positive."
Ashley also sees potential to draw more visitors for events like pony rides and perhaps, a horse festival.
The ordinance takes effect immediately, but requires riders to make reservations three days in advance. So if you call the town clerk's office today, you could be saddled up by Saturday.
