Ocean City to unveil dolphin sculpture on National Dolphin Day

If you're spending any spring break time next week in Ocean City, be sure to wave at the dolphins.

Not the ones in the water, but the bronze dolphins that make up a new sculpture set to be installed Tuesday at the intersection of Coastal Highway and Route 90.

"Dance of the Dolphins" shows three dolphins playing amid a bronze wave. The 16-foot statue designed by David Turner of Olney, Va., and the park-like plaza where it will be located cost about $100,000 according to official estimates.

The sculpture is ninth project of the Ocean City Development Corporation's (OCDC) Public Art Program.

"We've all seen dolphins when walking the beach or riding the waves and everyone loves it when there's a dolphin sighting," said Chris Trimper, chair of the OCDC Public Art Committee, in a news release. "There's something special about these creatures that makes this statue the perfect symbol to welcome the millions of visitors to our resort each year."

Trimper said a campaign is underway to raise money for the latest addition and also the ongoing efforts of the nonprofit group to bring artistic works to the town's landscape.

The sculpture will be unveiled fittingly on National Dolphin Day - Tuesday, April 14 - at 10 a.m. at a ceremony next to the Ocean City Tennis Center.
