Baltimore makes The Daily Beast's list of '2016's Hottest Destinations'

The beaches of Lanai, Hawaii, the valleys of Wales, the streets of Baltimore.

While this may seem like a game of one of these things is not like the other, all three cities were named among the top travel destinations for 2016 by The Daily Beast.

"The home of the Orioles deserves as much buzz for its 'upcoming coolness' as Detroit's new-Brooklyn messaging over the last couple of years," writer Brandon Presser says of Charm City in his list of "2016's Hottest Destinations."

While we may take issue with the "upcoming" caveat and we've heard the Brooklyn comparison before, Presser does highlight some great things about Baltimore. He credits the American Visionary Art Museum for setting "the tone for the city's quirky-cool vibe." He also praises the museum's restaurant, Encantada, as well as the city's dining scene as a whole. (Perhaps Baltimore's recent Zagat nod caught his eye.)

Finally, Presser mentions The Ivy Hotel, a luxury hotel in Midtown that opened this year, as a "promising sign of things to come."

Baltimore wasn't the most nontraditional location to make the list, which focused on destinations outside the realm of mainstream tourism. Mongolia is Presser's top pick, and North Korea — yes, you read that right — made the cut, too.
