Laurel Holiday House Tour brings to life 'Old Laurel feeling'

Temperatures pushing 70 may not have been in tune with the season Saturday afternoon, but the mild weather conjured a pleasant day for those attending the Laurel Historical Society's biennial Holiday House Tour. Pat Higgins, of Silver Spring, said she was "born and raised" in Laurel and still attends St. Philip's Episcopal Church on Main Street. Members of her family have resided in Laurel since 1889.

CCPS field trip to Baltimore cancelled

In response to the pending verdict in the trial of Officer William Porter, the first of the six officers to be tried in the death of Freddie Gray, Carroll County Public Schools has cancelled one field trip leaving from Robert Moton Elementary School Wednesday to Baltimore City, according to CCPS Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Steve Johnson.

Santa trades his sleigh for a fire truck [Clarksville]

Santa may arrive on Dec. 24 in a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer, but on Dec. 12, he's more likely to arrive in Clarksville by fire truck. Santa will be welcoming children to visit and chat in the engine bay of the Fifth District fire station on Saturday, Dec. 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are welcome to come share pizza with Santa. The cost is $6 for ages 6 and up and free for ages 5 and under. It's a great photo op.

The Maryland men's basketball team couldn't fly out immediately after Tuesday's 89-81 loss at North Carolina because its private plane got grounded due to fog. The nearly five-hour drive was spent decompressing after the loss to the No. 9 Tar Heels, catching up on sleep and studies, as well as doing some early preparation for Friday's game against Saint Francis (Pa.) at Xfinity Center.

Laurel's Holiday House Tour has artistic bonus this year

Laurel Historical Society member and Holiday House Tour Chairman Clayton Cooper Jr. helped broker a collaboration between this year's house tour and another local group he has membership with, the Laurel Arts District Committee, which promotes local artists and the establishment of the arts district in the Main Street neighborhood. In a joint effort, an empty home has been turned into an art gallery tour stop, The Gallery at 515.
