Orioles manager Buck Showalter said it was a difficult decision to not start veteran designated hitter Jim Thome, the club's most experience postseason player, in Sunday's American League Division Series opener at Camden Yards againtst New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia. Thome did receive the start in Monday's Game 2 against veteran lefty Andy Pettitte.

Up until the ninth inning, it was a great game, and TBS provided coverage worthy of it.

I started out planning to say some nice stuff about this CBS Sports broadcast team. I really did. But then, I went back over my notes, and thought about what I had actually seen. And this is the best I can say: For every good thing the crew did, they did at least one or more wrongheaded things.

This is the kind of thing they used to teach in journalism school and I wish they still did: The way one careless mistake can diminish an otherwise strong performance and bring embarrassment instead of praise.

When the Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays begin a three-game series Tuesday at Camden Yards, the two most effective relievers in the American League will be in uniform. It's fair to speculate that without Orioles closer Jim Johnson and Rays closer Fernando Rodney, their teams probably wouldn't be in playoff contention.
