Backstrom scores winner, Caps edge Islanders, 2-1

WASHINGTON — Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau knew Nicklas Backstrom wouldn't remain without a point for long, and he's sure that Washington's struggling power play will eventually come around.

Backstrom deflected in Alex Ovechkin's drive on a man advantage with 3:39 left, lifting the Capitals to a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night.

With New York's Blake Comeau off for roughing, Ovechkin whistled a long-range shot from just inside the blue line that tipped off Backstrom's foot and past Dwayne Roloson for his first goal of the season and Washington's third straight victory.
