Syracuse downs UMass, 16-9

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sophomore attackman Jim Morrissey's hat trick led No. 4 Syracuse past No. 10 Massachusetts, 16-9, in the championship game of the Fleet Lacrosse Invitational at Brown Stadium yesterday.

Defending national champion Syracuse (5-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead 7:25 into the game and never looked back. The Orangemen led 6-1 after two periods, 10-3 at the half and 12-6 after three.

Four Orangemen scored two goals each -- Roy Colsey, Chad Smith, Matt Doyle and Mark Fietta. Freshman Brendan Glass led the Minutemen (2-2) with a hat trick. Eric Bailey and Wes Depp had two goals each for Massachusetts.
