- Lifelong Laurel residents Wayne and Nancy (formerly Feick) Becraft celebrated 50 years of marriage on Aug. 1, 2014, at an intimate family gathering with their son Jeff, daughter-in-law Suzette, grandkids Spencer, Grace and Evan; and their son Mark, daughter-in-law Sheri, and grandkids Sean and Rebecca.
- The Leo Club at Folly Quarter Middle School has done it again. Their latest service project involved collecting items to be used in motel boxes for the Grassroots Homeless Shelter in Howard County.

- McCullough Field at Eighth and Montgomery streets will begin filling with cancer survivors, family members and supporters at noon on Saturday, June 7 for the overnight Relay for Life of Laurel. This year's theme is "Wish Upon a Star," and about 40 relay teams will set up and decorate their campsites during daylight hours.
- Best friends Kristy Murray and Mandi Phillips -- co-chairs of the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life at McCullough Field this weekend -- both have had family members suffer from cancer.

- Cheryl Bell has been participating in the Howard County Relay for Life in Columbia since 2002. After 11 events over the years, one aspect of the daylong effort to support cancer research remains her favorite.

- The Glenwood Middle School Leo Club's Bikes for the World collection drive was another success.
- Krisana Goel is in 8th grade at Clarksville Middle School. She, along with Anjali Mahadevia and Anjali Shroff, both in 11th grade at Atholton High School, Sashi Rai in ninth grade at River Hill High School, and Leena Rai, in fifth grade at Pointers Run, founded an organization called South Asian Girls Education (S.A.G.E.) to change lives through education for girls.
- The recent Kentucky Derby event, held at the Carriage House and sponsored by the Port Deposit Chamber of Commerce, was a grand success. Folks enjoyed food, music and lots of fun while raising funds to restore the drinking fountain in the town square.
- Folly Quarter Middle School has recently made the list of the 50 Best Middle Schools in the United States as compiled by TheBestSchools.org, who placed Folly Quarter in the number 12 position based on academic excellence, test scores, awards, diversity and reputation.

- Sarah Cullison started her sports career playing soccer and softball in the North Carroll Rec Council, but she liked the faster pace of soccer, so she soon switched from softball to lacrosse. Now, the senior is a top-notch defender for Manchester Valley's successful soccer and lacrosse teams.

Then emcee and DJ Bob Cross performed several Neil Diamond tunes. The evening's entertainment was capped by Jesse McCarly with his "Powers of the Mind" show
