A local bike shop and a national outdoor gear chain proudly and defiantly closed their doors on one of the year's busiest shopping days, gambling that consumers have grown weary of Black Friday and would embrace a new tradition involving hiking, biking and "civility."

Joe's Bike Shop, a Baltimore-area bicycle retailer, jumped on board with REI's #OptOutside decision to close for Black Friday and encourage customers to enjoy the outdoors.

The Port of Baltimore's sales plan, built several years ago, targets autos, containers, farm and construction equipment, forest products and passenger cruises. The sales brochure consists of the port itself: its location in the middle of a pocket of prosperity, its efficient workforce and tranquil labor relations, its sense of maritime community built over generations.
