Kevin McCarthy elected Republican House majority leader

Republicans in the House of Representatives on Thursday chose Kevin McCarthy of California as the chamber's next majority leader, a Republican aide announced.

McCarthy, currently the party's No. 3 leader in the House, defeated Representative Raul Labrador in the secret ballot contest to succeed Eric Cantor as the No. 2 House Republican.

McCarthy served for four years in the California Assembly, including two years as minority leader, before he was elected to Congress from a district that includes his hometown of Bakersfield and most of the Antelope Valley.
