- Doris A. Singer, who had worked as a laboratory assistant, college admissions officer and an educator, died Jan. 6 of a cerebral hemorrhage at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, N.Y. She was 92.
- Wilde Lake High School senior Nijah Richardson Monday, Jan. 13 won first place in the Howard County Poetry Out Load Competition
- this summer, the original manuscript of "The Star-Spangled Banner," the poem Francis Scott Key wrote about a certain inspiring morning in September of 1814, will be the centerpiece of a sprawling, multimillion-dollar statewide celebration.
- The No. 6 Red Storm clamped down on defense, forcing turnovers with timely pressure and converting those takeaways into points. The home team attacked the basket aggressively, made free throws and the roll never ended. When it was all finished, Edmondson came away with a satisfying, 61-46 win over No. 11 Dunbar in a battle of defending state champions.
- Virginia Bates, a poet and artist who opposed the Vietnam War and was a founder of the Howard County Peace Action Community, died of flu complications Dec. 9 at Bridgepoint of Los Altos, an assisted-living facility in California. The former Woodbine resident was 88.
- Gayle Danley referred to the Wilde Lake Middle School eighth-graders as "poets," a label that sounded hip and eclectic and, by the tone of her fiery prose, non-negotiable.

She was locally active with the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo), which is hosting its third annual Clifton-themed event, "Telling Our Stories, Michael S. Glaser Celebrates Lucille Clifton." This free program takes place on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 7:30- 9 p.m. in Howard Community College's Monteabaro Recital Hall.
