- A new exhibit, "Stationed in Laurel: Our Civil War Story," opened Feb. 3 at the Laurel Museum and captures that segment of Laurel's history. In September, a mini-exhibit was displayed at the museum that gave a partial account of Laurel's Civil War past. Museum director Lindsey Baker said they decided to expand that theme for this year's major exhibit because of the response that one attracted.
- Jerry Chappell was named the Laurel Historical Society Volunteer of the Year for 2012.
- Mary Alma O'Connor Lears, a former Walters Art Museum volunteer guide whose keen eyes alerted officials to a $1 million theft later linked to a gallery security guard, died of lung disease Jan. 24 at Gilchrist Hospice Care. The Towson and former Roland Park resident was 88.

- Museums are popular destinations during the holiday season. After people have opened presents, eaten more than they should, and otherwise spent quantity time and hopefully quality time with family and friends, they may develop cabin fever. Most people will rush out to big box retailers in order to use their gift cards, while the cultural consumers among them also will find that a museum visit is in order.
