Marita Carroll, a retired Annapolis elementary school teacher and civil rights activist who was arrested on trespassing charges in 1960 as she sat at a bus stop lunch counter, died of Alzheimer's disease complications Saturday at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The Eastport resident was 91.

As a proud Muslim American I can't help but relate Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a Dream" speech to another speech made over 1,500 years ago. The Prophet Muhammad, in similar address stated, "All mankind is from Adam and Eve ... a white has no superiority over a black nor does a black have any superiority over a white except in piety and good action." I call on my fellow citizens to continue to project this message that has been echoed by great leaders from century to century.
