The snapshot of the Ravens' defense displays plenty of improvement, regaining stinginess overall as a run defense along with an occasionally formidable pass rush. However, a deeper look showed a recurring flaw from the defense late in games that played a significant role in preventing the Ravens from reaching the playoffs one year after winning the Super Bowl.
For much of the season, we have asked the Ravens about the need to generate more chunk passing plays down the field. Perhaps just as much of an emphasis should have been placed on the need to prevent them.
It's a good thing the Ravens aren't looking for a pass-catching tight end in free agency because pickings are slim. Jermichael Finley, the top free agent tight end in this year's class, won't hit the market as the Green Bay Packers re-signed him to a two-year deal last month. That leaves the Washington Redskins' Fred Davis as the top free agent at the position, but there is a chance the Redskins could use their franchise tag to keep Davis.
