Relay Elementary School students rallied to raise $5,500 through a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraiser called Pennies for Patients. Art teacher Barbara Cavelius missed the last school year as she went through treatment for leukemia.
Laurel resident Marisol Ramirez was born without a functioning small intestine and has undergone multiple organ transplants and fought lymphoma. To honor Marisol's bravery, the American Red Cross, along with her teachers, staff and fellow students at Scotchtown Hills Elementary, are mounting a community blood drive Wednesday, Feb. 29, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the school.
