Maria G. Zannino, a longtime Highlandtown funeral director who was active in numerous Italian cultural and social organizations, died Saturday from complications of heart disease at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson. She was 80.

The Fallston Flames U10 boys soccer team completed a successful season with back-to-back tournament championships recently. Or just keep in mind that a saint's feast day isn't like a holiday associated with a figure of earthly accomplishment. We celebrate on Washington's birthday with department store sales, but the saints are remembered on the days when they leave this life to meet their maker. If it's too early for your feast day, don't drink and drive and you'll improve your chances of celebrating St. Patrick's come next year.
In pursuit of creating a permanent winter holiday break, Howard County government has changed its holiday schedule for 2012, requiring employees to work Good Friday and Columbus Day so they can have off between Christmas and New Year's.
In short, Columbus didn't discover America, nor did Erikson. They did start something that led to what we've got today, and that's worth celebrating. And it's also worth taking pride in as Italian-Americans, Scandanavian-Americans and any other brand of American who is proud to be here.
